In the series finale of The Weight of the Chair, Tanya Engesether casts a clear, specific, and deeply honest picture of what changes when a leader has done the inner work — the honest, countercultural, body-and-soul-and-spirit work of tending to herself that this series has been describing.
Not theory. Not aspiration. What actually becomes different.
The presence that comes when the nervous system is no longer running a continuous background threat assessment. The ability to receive feedback without it becoming a verdict on personhood. The limits set with honesty rather than apology. The groundedness that stays when the emotional temperature in the room rises. The leading from overflow rather than from the bottom of the tank.
And beyond the leadership — what changes in the relationship with the team, with the self, and with God. The faith that becomes sturdy rather than performed. The quality of prayer that shifts when the whole self shows up rather than the managed version. The peace that guards rather than the peace that depends on outcomes.
This is not a destination. It is a direction. And Tanya names that honestly too — because the work is ongoing, the returning is ongoing, and what changes is not that the hard things stop. What changes is the baseline you come back to between them.
Key Takeaway
The work does not produce a life without difficulty. It produces a different quality of life within it. A different baseline to return to between the hard things. More presence, more honesty, more groundedness, more genuine usefulness to the people you lead and the God you serve. That is what is available on the other side. And it is worth every difficult step of getting there.
I hope this episode blesses you!
Xoxo,
Tanya

In Episode 4 of The Weight of the Chair series, Tanya shares the real story of the season she almost quit leadership — not as a distant, safely processed memory, but as a wound that cost real things and changed real aspects of how she leads.
She describes leading her team through one of the hardest seasons any leader has navigated in recent history — implementing decisions that caused pain, being the face of circumstances nobody chose, and experiencing in the aftermath what may be one of the most specific wounds a deeply invested leader can receive: having decades of relationship and demonstrated care weighed against a hard season — and found somehow insufficient.
She names the anger she did not know she was allowed to have. The identity rupture that came when the people she had invested in most directed their pain at her. The people-pleasing thread underneath it all — the way her sense of self as a leader had become more dependent on their assessment than she realized. And the honest admission that the thought of quitting has been more present since that season than before.
And then she names what God has done in the meantime. The identity work that has been the most stabilizing work of her leadership life. And the specific scriptures that have held her.
This episode is for every leader who has been wounded. Who is still showing up. Who has wondered more than once whether it is worth it.
It is. And she is going to tell you why.
In This Episode You'll Learn:
What the specific wound of having your character discounted in a hard season actually feels like
How trauma and grief responses in teams get directed at leadership — and why it is not always a just verdict
The people-pleasing thread in leadership identity — and why deeply relational leaders are most vulnerable to this specific wound
Why unacknowledged anger in leaders does not disappear — it goes somewhere else
The cultural shift toward self-orientation and what it means for servant leaders
What God has done with the scar— and what it has produced
What 2 Corinthians 4:8-9, Galatians 1:10, and Psalm 18:2 offer the leader who has been struck down
What Tanya wants to say directly to the leader who recognizes herself in this story
Why staying is not failure — staying is leadership
Scripture Referenced
2 Corinthians 4:8-9 — "We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed."
Galatians 1:10 — "Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God?"
Psalm 18:2 — "The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer."
Key Takeaway
What they said about you in their hardest moment is not the full truth about who you are. The investment was not wasted even when it felt unreceived. And the identity work — building your sense of self on something that human assessment cannot reach — is the most important work available to you right now.
I hope this episode blesses you!

Tanya

There is a specific kind of weight that no leadership book prepares you for.
Not the weight of hard decisions, though those are real. Not the weight of difficult people, though those exist too.
The weight of what you cannot say.
The personnel decision in process. The organizational uncertainty not yet public. The confidence placed in you by someone who trusted you with something significant. Your own private fear that you might not be enough for the role — the one you cannot voice to the people who are counting on you to be certain.
In Episode 3 of The Weight of the Chair series, Tanya Engesether names this specific, rarely discussed territory of leadership — the experience of carrying things that have no appropriate outlet — and brings both clinical honesty and deep theological comfort to bear on it.
She walks through what emotional suppression actually does to the body — drawing from the research of psychologist James Pennebaker on expressive writing and physiological health — and names the predictable consequences when the weight accumulates without release: emotional numbing, displaced emotion, physical symptoms, and compassion fatigue.
She then offers something both clinically grounded and spiritually profound: the specific practices that allow a leader to tend to the weight she is carrying within the appropriate limits of her role.
This episode will not take the weight away. But it will help you carry it better.
In This Episode You'll Learn:
The four specific categories of things leaders carry that cannot be shared — and what makes each one uniquely difficult
The physiological cost of emotional suppression — what the research shows about holding things without outlet
What happens to a leader's body and leadership when the weight accumulates too long without release
The theological reality of being fully known by God — and why it is more than spiritual comfort
What Psalm 139 and Psalm 62:8 offer the leader who cannot tell anyone
The difference between honorable carrying and carrying that has become costly
Five specific, legitimate, boundaried outlets for processing what cannot be shared broadly
The practice of full-weight, unedited prayer — and why specificity matters
James Pennebaker's research on expressive writing and physiological health
When to know that the weight has exceeded what solo carrying can hold — and why asking for help is a leadership strength
Scripture Referenced
Psalm 139:1-4 — "You have searched me, Lord, and you know me... Before a word is on my tongue you know it completely."
Psalm 62:8 — "Pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge."
Matthew 11:28 — "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest."
Key Takeaway
The weight of what you cannot tell anyone is real — and it has a physiological cost when it has nowhere to go. Being fully known by God is not just spiritual comfort. It is the most complete outlet available to a leader — the one place where nothing needs to be held back, the weight can be fully set down, and the confidentiality is eternally safe.
I hope this episode blesses you!

Every leader feels it.
The 3am spiral. The Sunday night dread. The tight chest before a hard conversation. The mind that never fully stops — replaying, rehearsing, anticipating, calculating — even when you have physically left the building.
That anxiety is not a sign that something is wrong with you.
In Episode 2 of The Weight of the Chair series, certified Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner and Christian Life Coach Tanya Engesether takes an honest, clinical, and deeply personal look at the specific anxiety that accompanies leadership — what makes it different from ordinary anxiety, what is actually happening in the nervous system when it shows up, and why it makes complete physiological and emotional sense.
Drawing from neuroscience, functional health, and a faith-rooted perspective, Tanya walks through the role of the amygdala, the HPA axis, and the prefrontal cortex in the leadership anxiety experience — and names the specific ways chronic stress in a leadership role leaves its mark on the body. She also addresses the people-pleasing thread that amplifies leadership anxiety for many women, and offers Philippians 4:6-7 not as a platitude but as a genuine neurological and spiritual practice.
And then she gets personal — sharing her own toolkit for the moments when the anxiety gets loud.
If you have ever wondered why the anxiety of leadership feels different from anything you prepared for — this episode will give you language, clinical understanding, and practical tools for working with it rather than pushing through it.
In This Episode You'll Learn:
What makes leadership anxiety distinct from ordinary anxiety
The four specific dimensions of leadership anxiety most leaders never have language for
What the amygdala, the HPA axis, and the prefrontal cortex are doing during high-stakes leadership moments
Why your body cannot distinguish between physical threat and psychological threat — and what that means for leaders
Why the prefrontal cortex gets suppressed exactly when you need it most — and what to do about it
The somatic signature of anxiety — why it lives in the body and cannot be thought away
How people-pleasing patterns amplify leadership anxiety — and what that means
Philippians 4:6-7 as a clinical and spiritual practice — not a platitude
The physiological sigh — the fastest known way to activate the parasympathetic nervous system
Tanya's personal toolkit for leadership anxiety — specific, practical, honest
When anxiety is information rather than just noise — and how to tell the difference
Scripture Referenced
Philippians 4:6-7 — "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God."
1 Peter 5:7 — "Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you."
Key Takeaway
The anxiety that comes with the seat is not evidence of inadequacy. It is the natural, predictable, neurologically inevitable response to carrying genuine responsibility for outcomes and people that matter. Understanding what your nervous system is doing — and having real tools to work with it — changes not just how you feel in the role, but who you are in the role.
I hope this episode blesses you!

Nobody told you it would feel like this.
You prepared for the hard decisions, the difficult conversations, the long hours. You read the books, completed the training, built the skills. You knew leadership would be challenging.
What nobody told you was how lonely it would be.
In the first episode of The Weight of the Chair series, Tanya Engesether opens a conversation that most leadership podcasts never have — the specific, confusing, hard-to-name loneliness that lives inside leadership. Not the loneliness of having no one around. The loneliness of being surrounded — and still somehow separate.
With her signature blend of personal vulnerability, functional health insight, and faith-rooted perspective, Tanya names what leadership loneliness actually is, why it catches high-achieving women so completely off guard, what it does to the body physiologically, and what she has personally learned to do when it hits.
Including a visit to one of the most underused stories in leadership content — the prophet Elijah under the juniper tree — and what God's response to his complete depletion reveals about how we are meant to be met in our hardest moments.
If you have ever sat in a full room and felt completely alone — this episode was made for you.
In This Episode You'll Learn:
What makes leadership loneliness different from ordinary loneliness
The four specific characteristics of leadership isolation that most leaders never have language for
Why the authority of leadership changes relationships in ways that create genuine distance
Why leadership loneliness catches high-capacity women especially off guard
The story of Elijah in 1 Kings 19 — and what God's response to his depletion reveals
The clinical picture — what chronic loneliness does to the HPA axis, cortisol, inflammation, immune function, and sleep
Why tending to leadership loneliness is not weakness — it is healthcare
Tanya's personal strategies for navigating the loneliness of leadership — specific, practical, and honest
Why peer relationships are the most clinically and experientially important investment a leader can make
What specific prayer looks like versus general prayer — and why it matters
Scripture Referenced
1 Kings 19:4–18 — Elijah under the juniper tree
1 Kings 19:7 — "Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you."
1 Kings 19:18 — "I reserve seven thousand in Israel."
Key Takeaway
The loneliness of leadership is not evidence that you are doing it wrong. It is evidence that you are carrying something real — something that deserves to be tended rather than pushed through. The God who met a depleted, lonely prophet under a tree is the same God who is with you in the weight of the chair.

You've named the pattern. You've asked the identity question. Now it's time to look at what people-pleasing is actually doing in your body — specifically, recognizably, and honestly.
In the final episode of The Dying to Please Series, certified Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner and Christian Life Coach, Tanya Engesether, walks through five specific signs that your nervous system has been running in chronic fawn mode for too long — and what those signs look like in your hormones, your gut, your sleep, your mood, and your sense of self.
Then she gets practical. Tanya offers a grounded, grace-filled starting place for women who are ready to stop managing symptoms and start addressing what's driving them — in their bodies and in their lives.
This episode is for the woman who is ready. Not perfectly ready. Not have-it-all-figured-out ready. Just ready to begin.
Key Takeaway
The women who heal most fully are not the ones who found the perfect supplement or the perfect protocol. They are the women who decided they were worth addressing at the root. That decision is the beginning of everything.

The hardest part of recognizing a people-pleasing pattern isn't the recognition itself.
It's the quiet, unsettling question that surfaces right after:
But if I stop... who am I?
In Part 2 of The Dying to Please Series, Tanya Engesether goes beneath the surface of the people-pleasing pattern to the identity question at its core — because for many high-capacity women, people-pleasing isn't just something they do. It is who they are. The strong one. The reliable one. The capable one. The selfless one.
And the prospect of changing that pattern doesn't feel like healing. It feels like losing themselves.
In this episode, Tanya explores how people-pleasing becomes identity over time, names the specific roles many women have built their lives around, and addresses the grief that comes with letting go of a familiar story — even a painful one. She then goes to the theological root of the issue: the difference between a worth that is performed and a worth that is established by God before you ever did a single thing.
This is not a ten-step plan. This is an honest, grace-filled conversation about what it means to begin rebuilding your identity on a foundation that does not shift — and what becomes possible when you do.
In This Episode You'll Learn:
How people-pleasing transitions from survival strategy to identity over time
The specific roles high-capacity women build their lives around — and what each one is costing them
Why letting go of a people-pleasing identity involves real grief — and why that grief is valid
The theological foundation of worth — what God says about your value before your performance begins
The difference between performing an identity and living from one
What Psalm 139, Ephesians 2:10, and Galatians 5:1 say about identity and freedom
What it practically looks like to begin untangling worth from usefulness
Why receiving is a spiritual practice — and why people-pleasers struggle with it
How identity-level work is the foundation of sustainable physical healing
Scripture Referenced
Psalm 139:14 — "I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made."
Ephesians 2:10 — "For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works."
Galatians 5:1 — "It is for freedom that Christ has set us free."
Galatians 1:10 — "Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God?"
Key Takeaway
Your worth was established before your performance began. Rebuilding your identity outside of people-pleasing doesn't happen all at once — it happens in small, repeated, often uncomfortable moments of choosing differently. And the woman you find on the other side of that work is worth knowing.
I hope this episode blesses you!

Tanya

What if the root of your hormonal disruption, your chronic fatigue, your gut issues, and your anxiety isn't what your doctor has been looking for?
What if it's people-pleasing?
In this episode of Aligned Vitality, certified Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner and Christian Life Coach Tanya Engesether makes the clinical and spiritual case that people-pleasing is not just an emotional pattern — it is a chronic stress state with real, measurable consequences for the body.
Drawing from functional health science, trauma-informed psychology, and a faith-rooted perspective, Tanya unpacks what people-pleasing actually is at a nervous system level, where it comes from, and what it is doing to your hormones, your gut, your thyroid, your immune system, and your brain.
If you are a high-capacity woman in midlife who is exhausted, symptomatic, and starting to suspect that something deeper is at the root — this episode is for you.
In This Episode You'll Learn:
What people-pleasing actually is at a nervous system level — and why it's not a character flaw
The fawn response — the fourth stress response most people have never heard of
Where people-pleasing patterns typically originate — childhood, faith communities, identity, and worth
The full metabolic cascade of chronic people-pleasing — from HPA axis dysregulation to hormones, gut, thyroid, inflammation, and neurotransmitters
What the pregnenolone steal is — and why it matters for midlife hormone health
Why midlife amplifies everything that chronic stress has been quietly building
The difference between fear-driven appeasement and Spirit-led service
What Galatians 1:10 has to say about people-pleasing and identity
The physiological reality of living rooted in God's approval instead of human approval
Where to begin — practically and spiritually — if this episode resonates
Scripture Referenced
Galatians 1:10 — "Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God?"
Key Takeaway
People-pleasing is not just emotionally costly — it is physiologically destructive. The fawn response keeps the body in a chronic stress state that disrupts hormones, degrades gut health, suppresses thyroid function, drives inflammation, and depletes the neurotransmitters responsible for mood and resilience. Healing begins when we address the root — not just the symptoms.

When a clip of comedian and podcast host Theo Von went viral for his raw, unfiltered reflection on healing, identity, and addiction recovery, something in it resonated far beyond the recovery community.
In the clip, Theo references the story of the crippled man at the Pool of Bethesda in John 5 — and pauses on the question Jesus asked: "Do you want to be healed?" He reflects that being healed means a new story, a different identity. And that as much as we say we want freedom, the old story — even a broken one — is familiar. And familiar can feel safer than free.
In this episode of Aligned Vitality, Tanya responds to that clip with the full theological and practical weight it deserves — because Theo had the answer. He just didn't know it.
This episode explores the story in John 5 with fresh eyes, unpacks the human psychology of identity and old stories, and brings the conversation home for women navigating not just personal patterns, but health struggles that have quietly become part of who they are. Through a functional health and faith lens, Tanya asks the same question Jesus asked — and invites you to answer honestly.
In This Episode You'll Learn:
The story of the Pool of Bethesda — and the detail most people overlook
Why Jesus asked "Do you want to be healed?" — and why the man's response matters
What Theo Von got profoundly right about healing, identity, and the fear of a new story
How the question "do you want to be well?" applies to more than addiction
The patterns high-capacity women build their identities around — and why letting go is scary
How chronic health struggles can quietly become part of our identity
What Theo's approach to prayer can teach us about bringing ambivalence to God
What healing actually requires — and why transformation is a new story, not just a fixed one
A practical and honest approach to inviting Jesus into the broken and familiar places
Scripture Referenced
John 5:1–15 — The healing at the Pool of Bethesda
John 5:6 — "Do you want to get well?"
John 5:8 — "Get up! Pick up your mat and walk."
John 15:5 — "I am the vine; you are the branches… apart from me you can do nothing."
Key Takeaway
You don't have to come to Jesus with a clean yes. You come with your honest, ambivalent, afraid-of-the-new-story self — and invite Him in. That honesty is the open door. And the God who healed a man after 38 years of waiting — without even a full yes — will meet you exactly where you are.
I hope this episode blesses you!
Xoxo,
Tanya

What do you do when you know something is wrong… but there is no clear diagnosis, no obvious treatment plan, and no quick fix?
In this episode of Aligned Vitality, Tanya shares a personal reflection after a recent visit to the Mayo Clinic with her husband, who has been dealing with chronic lung and sinus issues, ongoing inflammation, anxiety around his symptoms, and years of frustration searching for answers.
While the visit brought relief in some ways, it also confirmed something deeply important: the absence of a major diagnosis does not always mean the presence of health.
This conversation explores the gap between “not diagnosed” and “truly well,” the role of chronic inflammation, metabolic dysfunction, stress, and lifestyle habits in long-term unwellness, and why so many people want a quick fix when what they really need is a foundation for healing.
Tanya also talks about the emotional reality of being in the “wanting phase” of health change, why people often feel overwhelmed by the whole picture, and how healing usually begins not with a dramatic overhaul, but with one small step at a time.
If you’ve ever felt like something was off in your body but could not get clear answers, this episode will help you feel seen, informed, and hopeful.
In This Episode
What the Mayo Clinic confirmed about inflammation, stress, and lifestyle
Why feeling unwell often starts long before disease gets a diagnosis
The difference between symptom management and health building
Why conventional medicine and functional health ask different questions
The emotional toll of chronic symptoms without clear answers
Why some people stay in the “wanting phase” of health change
How to begin making lifestyle changes without overwhelm
Why healing often starts with small, consistent steps
Key Takeaway
The absence of a diagnosis does not always mean the presence of health.
Sometimes the body has been under strain for years before disease gets a name — and healing begins not with a quick fix, but with consistent choices that support the way the body was designed to heal.

I hope this episode blesses you!
