Happy Friday my Faithful Friends!
With the ever-changing work culture we find ourselves in, leadership can be very challenging. I think it is especially difficult when you tend to care too much, if there is such a thing. But I also believe that God calls certain people to lead. Like much else, he does not promise it will be unicorns and rainbows. Rarely is Kingdom work the easiest kind of work, and true leadership….the kind someone is called to, is and should be Kingdom work if done according to God’s will and when giving glory to Him.
Tune in to hear what the bible has to say to the leader who seeks to do the good work of God but grows weary….

Episode #24 Letter from a Leader Who Cares Too Much

Monday Apr 17, 2023

Hey, Friend!
Today’s episode might be a little controversial or sensitive, I don’t know, but I felt God calling me to speak on behalf of some of the leaders out there who tend to care so much about their role and their team, yet it never seems like enough and they are on the verge of throwing in the towel.
I am talking today from the perspective of a leader who cares too much, but feels a bit invisible. She is a conglomerate of many leaders I have seen or heard from who have been so committed to their teams and to their role, yet their efforts often go unnoticed. They are nearing their breaking point in a work environment and work culture that has changed so significantly.
This is far different than most episodes, so thank you for your willingness to listen. This is not intended to reflect any specific individual…I have taken some creative liberties, if you will. It is written as a letter from a leader to a team member who is actively engaged, a team member who is present but complacent, and a team member that is actively disengaged.
I would love to know if if this resonates a little with any of my listeners. Please leave me a voice or written message at gracefilledleader.com/contact and let me know your thoughts.
I hope this episode blesses you and that you will continue to join me on this journey toward balance, peace, and freedom to live the abundant life you were called to.

Happy Friday my Faithful Friends!
By now most of you have heard me share my own personal struggles with people pleasing and approval seeking. It has manifested itself in so many ways throughout my life, as far back as I can remember and in ways we haven’t yet talked about. It wasn’t until I was just exhausted and somewhat crushed under the weight of it that I began to find my way out. And that only came through surrender and the realization that I needed to turn my eyes to the Lord. The bible very clearly tells us that we ought not seek the approval of man above God.
So, what does the bible say about people-pleasing? Tune in to find out!

Today we are continuing our discussion around people pleasing. Last week we talked about some of the roots of people-pleasing. And I think most of us who struggle with it think we are just being good people. We say “yes” to things because we want to be helpful and we want to be liked. However, there are some real consequences to being a people pleaser.
Beyond the obvious physical, emotional, and mental impacts of long-term people-pleasing, I am not sure we stop to think of the bigger picture…. the less obvious consequences of being a chronic people-pleaser. We like to think it just means we are being a nice person who serves others.
The problem is, people-pleasing only wins us very temporary and superficial peace. When we continually adapt our beliefs, messaging, and choices to gain the approval of others, no one will truly know who we are. We may actually lose track of who we are. More importantly, no one will know WHOSE we are. In truth, people-pleasing may be a strong indicator that we may not TRULY know WHOSE we are…. We may not be walking in a true heart knowledge of who we are in Christ. When we are truly walking in that knowledge, we are set free to experience something far more fulfilling than the superficial approval of man.
I hope this episode blesses you and that you will continue to join me on this journey toward balance, peace, and freedom to live the abundant life you were called to.

I know not all of my listeners fit this bill, but many women in leadership that I meet and speak to, and many women in general have some tendencies toward people pleasing or approval seeking. In some ways, it got us to where we are because we are typically very dependable and hard-working. However, it is not an especially healthy way of living life or leading… I consider myself a recovering people-pleaser. Notice I say recovering not recovered. I think I will forever fight the thought distortions that lead me toward people-pleasing, but I have also come to learn how costly a life spent people-pleasing can be.
I have been studying myself, and others and researching the origins of people pleasing and approval seeking. We all have different stories and ultimately different seeds planted that grow into patterns of approval-seeking. But there are some pretty common and universal traits of people-pleasers.
Today we are talking about some of the common motivators. Have a listen and see what resonates with you.
I hope this episode blesses you and that you will continue to join me on this journey toward balance, peace, and freedom to live the abundant life you were called to.

Happy Monday, Friends!
Today we are back to talking about what it means to be a great leader. This is going to sound kind of weird, but today’s episode was inspired by a whistle . Yep, that’s right…a whistle…you know, the kind your gym teacher or sports coach wore around their neck as they had you running killers up and down the court at practice… I am sure you are thinking, what the heck does that have to do with a podcast about leadership?!
I was thinking about a leadership academy that I am going to be co-facilitating, and one of the icebreaker activities requires me to bring an object that represents my leadership or my idea of effective leadership. I had a few thoughts but hadn’t really settled on anything. Well, this morning I was going through our multipurpose drawer…aka junk drawer…and I saw a whistle on a lanyard. I knew immediately that would be the object I chose to bring to our first session of the leadership academy, and this is why.
When I saw that whistle, I thought of a sports coach. I then started to think about how much a great coach on the sports field has in common with an effective leader in the workplace. The goal and the role of the coach should be much the same as that of a team leader in the workplace. Tune in as we dive a little deeper into the 10 Qualities of a great sports coach (and a great leader).
I hope this episode blesses you and that you will continue to join me on this journey toward balance, peace, and freedom to live the abundant life you were called to.

Hey, friend!
If you have been listening the last several weeks, we have been talking about time management. Today is Part 4 in our Time Management series and we are going to get a lot more tactical this time. We are talking about the 4 Essential components of effective time management, and what a difference they can make in your ability to be productive and present at work and at home. You are definitely going to want to grab a notebook and pen for this one, folks!
I thought I was someone that was fairly good at managing my time, but I have discovered that I was not very good at all. It wasn’t until I really began to inventory my time, identify the waste, and develop systems to plan my weeks that I discovered what a disaster I had been for most of my adult life. When I look back at all of the years I spent far too many hours at work and was never able to keep up at home, I realized that I didn’t have much of a system that would set me up for success. I am learning how very important systems are when it comes to being efficient and productive.
I hope this episode blesses you and that you will continue to join me on this journey toward balance, peace, and freedom to live the abundant life you were called to.

Sister…do any of the following sound familiar?
“I want more time for myself but there just aren’t enough hours in the day!”
“I wish I could say “no” to some things, but I don’t want to let people down.”
“I am worried that if I take more time for myself people will think I am selfish.”
“If I don’t do it, nobody will!”
Well, guess what…. You are not alone! I think as Christians we often struggle even more than others do with these feelings. We want to be pleasing to God and serve others, and we are afraid that if we say “no” to serving others, we will be perceived as being unkind or selfish. But let me share a little kernel of truth that I am learning…
If we are spending all of our time saying “yes” to others, to the point that we are depleted and running on empty, chances are, there is a point at which we are saying “no” to God. We may be spending so much time pleasing others, that we are not doing the work and spending the time that is most pleasing to God. We become too tired to spend time in the word, too tired to pray, too distracted to focus on what the Holy Spirit is trying to tell us.
I know, I know….this episode is supposed to be about time management. Trust me, it is…it is about the real issue surrounding time management…the real solution…and the solution is not having more hours in the day. Tune it to hear more!
